Black History Month Resources

Black History Month has captured the imaginations and attention of many americans.  As such there is a wealth of information available to you via the internet.  I have tried to collect some links for you here that will help you in your research.  But please don't think that this list is comprehensive.  There are far too many sites to list them all and there is lots of good quality information to be found.  Book selections for Black History Monthcan be found by clicking this link.

Mom's Picks:

Enchanted Learning  - As usual Enchanted Learning comes through with printable activity books, biographical information on famous African-Americans, timelines, quizzes, coloring pages and more.  There is enough material avaible at this site to cover the subject for most younger children.  Upgraded access is available with the purchase of an annual membership (I recommend purchasing one if you can afford to do so), but you can still access quite a bit free of charge.  There are banner ads present on the print pages if you do not purchase a membership.

Answers in Genesis - Read about the shared origins of all men.  One Blood, the Biblical answer to racism.

Celebrating Black History - Curriculum ideas by Cathy Abraham.

This lesson plan includes 4 categories- Dreams and Possibilities, Food, Music and Dance and Parent/Child Activities.

Teacher Vision Virtual Field Trip- Underground Railroad

Teacher Vision Virtual Field Trip- Boston

Infoplease - This site offers an incredibly comprehensive list of links.  Included are several links for History and Timelines, Contemporary Issues, Holidays of special significance to African Americans, Education, Quizzes and Crosswords concerning African Americans as well as a list of other resources.  There are a few pop-ups at the top of the page, but I did not find them to be obtrusive.  The site is well worth visiting in order to access the many well organized links.  Several of the links that are specifically targeted toward children are designated as such for your convenience.

Fun Family Education  - At this website you can find lots of useful resources for kids of all ages.  Find a list of related books, get suggestions for year round activities, take quizzes about various topics, print coloring pages, read articles about racism and diversity and download printable books.

Time for Kids  - Sponsored by Time Magazine, and peppered with Time's ads, this site offers interactive articles, quizzes, and audio clips.  The information is provided in an interesting and engaging format making this site worth a visit.

Biography.com - This site is offering special features just for Black History month.  See video clips of Maya Angelou, Jesse Jackson and more.  Look at the past year's achievements by African Americans, learn about the civil rights struggle and read about the pioneers that overcame discrimination.  Note, this information is targeted toward all age groups so you may wish to preview some of the video or other materials.

U.S. Black History Medals - View the Congressional Gold Medals honoring the work of famous African-Americans created especially for Black History month.

More Sites of Interest:

Kathi Mitchell - This site offers a list of links to other sites that are specifically for children.  It has not yet been updated for 2007, but many of the links are still active and useful.  She has sorted the links by type or description to give you some idea of their worth before you venture forth.  Links include one to PBS, Librarian's Index, as well as sites that will take you to lesson plans for teachers an online or printable quizzes.

History Channel - Read about the history of the civl rights struggle, view video clips and great speeches (including ones by Malcom X, Lyndon B. Johnson, Thurgood Marshall, the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling, and more) , order DVDs and view online exhibits of historical events in black history. This is an all ages site, so the information is not specifically kid-friendly.

Encyclopedia Britannica's Guide to Black History - This site provides a timeline and links to the text of articles highlighted by EB's editors as being especially informative such as "African American Literature" by William L. Andrews, "Jazz" by Gunther Shuller and more.    A comprehensive index of topics is provided,  as well as links to source documents, an image gallery, internet guide, learing activities and several multimedia resources.  You can listen to Charlie Parker play the saxaphone, or view a discussion of Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education.  There's also c;ips of Duke Ellington playing the piano and John Coltrane playing the tenor saxaphone.  Again, since this site is targeted toward all ages you will need to select those resources that are age-appropriate for your child.

Target Dream in Color Page - A letter from Maya Angelou, a Poetry page, lesson plans for various age groups, links and more.
