Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Resources for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

January 15th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. You need to get to your library right away if you want to reserve books to study during this holiday.  Scroll down to see some suggested titles, available from HWTK affiliated Vendors.

But first, here are some links that may help you out...

Mom's Top Picks:

Enchanted Learning- I was able to access some of the MLK materials without logging in as a member, but you may need a membership to access all the available materials.  Enchanted Learning offers a small page suitable for coloring plus a brief biography of Martin Luther King, Jr. Following the initial link by selecting Dr. King's name will take you to several printout options including quizzes, word searches and a printable activity book.

Education World Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Lesson Plan - Find articles, lessons, ideas, books and activities all at this site.  The site includes links to audio clips of Dr. King.

Danielle's Place - This site offers member only as well as some free materials.  Included in the free materials is a sample lesson plan for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. This is a Christian lesson plan and includes a Bible verse reference, prayer and written lesson.  The craft printables are available to members only.

MLK, Jr. Special Collection at FREE - One stop to provide you with access to materials from all particiapting federal agencies.  Listen to key speeches by Martin Luther King, Jr. and others, view 41 historic sites related to the civil rights movement, view court documents related to Dr. King.

The Seattle Times- This newspaper has created a page dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement.  The site offers biographical information and photographs, articles, a timeline, quizzes and links to other resources.  Ads are on the sides and access to the materials is free.

Hands-on Teaching - Find a mini unit study on Martin Luther King, Jr. at this site.

DLTK Coloring Page - a free printable poster of Dr. King for your child to color.  Also see DLTK's Unity Wreath - trace your children's hands to make a unity wreath craft.

Other resources:

The King Center - Hear a recording of Dr. King's own voice giving one of his powerful speeches.  This is truly an awe inspiring opportunity but the excerpt is disappointingly brief.  This is the official living memorial to Dr. King established by his wife Coretta Scott King.  This is a text heavy site, targeted toward adults.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service  - Information about making MLK Day a day "on" not a day "off".  Designed to encourage service projects nationwide.

Nobel Prize - Provides a biography of Nobel Prize winner Dr. King, including his acceptance speech.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute - This site offers information, lesson plans and classroom resources for teaching about the liberation movement.

Sunnie Bunniezz - You'll find a brief biography Dr. King here followed by links to poetry selections, activities and other resources.  Advertisements were very limited and subtle and you didn't have to register or get past any ads to access the resources or free printables.

Teacher Link - This site provides a free one page lesson plan including background information, suggested activities to celebrate the day and a list of references as well as a mini-unit study.

Primary Games - Play Martin Luther King, Jr. games, print out coloring pages or find links to other site here.

Surfing The Net With Kids - This site is ad heavy but provides a list of online resources related to Martin Luther King, Jr. complete with a summary of what each site has to offer.  Premium members can access printable materials.

LSU's Biographical Sketch of Dr. King - a basic summary of Dr. King's life and works presented by Louisiana State University.

Kids Domain Projects for Martin Luther King Jr. Day - Note- this site uses various forms of advertising.  This site offers a craft, activities, clip art and coloring pages.  You do have to make it past the advertisement to get to the content for this site.  The craft is creating 3 faces using different colored wooden beads for a pin.  Activities are to guess the words of the "I have a dream" speech and take an online quiz.  You may need to use the above link to get back to the main MLK Day page after visiting the "Craft" page.  I couldn't get my browser to go "back" past the ad, and the MLK Day materials were created for January 2006.  This was not a problem for the "Activities" page.  Several of the sections actually link you to other websites including About.com and enchantedlearning.com.

Fun Family Education - Note you must enter an e-mail address to access these resources.  De-select all the newsletter options to avoid getting "Free" newsletters (unless you want them, that is).  This site offers a brief summary of the holiday and offers an online quiz.  Additional offerings include printable books, 5 activities for the day and additional quizzes. Links to additional resources are also provided.

Annie's "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day" Page - Annie's provided her own thoughts on what this day means, as well as links to various additional resources. Send a MLK Day e-card from her site.  Caution- some of the links may be out of date or take you to a different website.

Focus on the Family - This site includes an article "Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." written by Al Pittman of Calvary Worship Center in Colorado Springs, CO.

Here are some books and other items available from HWTK affiliated vendors to help you remember this leader.
